In Memory of George M. (Bear) Bauman 1934 - 2008 29 years of dedicated community emergency medical services |
This
memorial webpage was created in memory of our beloved friend, George
M. "The Bear" Bauman. George died Thursday February 28,
2008 after a courageous fight with lung cancer at the age of 73.
As one of the founding
fathers of Baldwin Emergency Medical Services, George understood that
the success of the emergency medical services organization was more
important than that of any individual. "Even though George was
responsible for helping to organize Baldwin EMS and was instrumental in
answering numerous 911 emergencies, he never sought any credit for
himself", as stated by Chief William Plunkett. "We at Baldwin EMS
refer to George's actions 'everyday grace.' It applies to those
who do their job and never seek credit for it."George, a retired guidance counselor from Thomas Jefferson High School spent over 50 years of his life dedicated to helping others through Fire and EMS as well as Emergency Management. Raised in the South Hills of Pittsburgh, George was one of two children in the family of insurance agent George A. Bauman, and his wife, Bernadette who was employed at Kaufmann's Department Store. After graduating from St. Wendelin High School in Baldwin in 1952, where he played football, George received his undergraduate degree from the University of Pittsburgh and taught American history at South Fayette High School. In 1958 while serving as a medic with the Fourth Armored Division, George met Janet Hanes, a resident of New Kensington, who was studying for her registered nurse certification at the University of Pittsburgh. "What impressed me the most when we first met was George's concern for others", says his wife Janet Bauman. " He was truly a man concerned about the well-being of other. He was only 16-years old when he joined Baldwin Independent Fire Company No. 1. George and Jan were married in 1960. George lived and breathed sports. His season tickets for the Steelers games were among his prized possessions. In addition to his wife Janet, George is survived by his daughters, Becky Karch of Boulder, Colorado and Lisa Lemonn of Lake Wylie, South Carolina and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his sister, Dorthea Tamburini. TRIBUTES If you would like to write a tribute to George, please click on the link below.
