Paramedic Michael Dziki represents C-Line for a Letter of Commendation after Confined Space Rescue
On October 20, 2008 Paramedic Dziki represented Baldwin EMS personnel who responded to a confined space rescue call in the borough of Pleasant Hills on September 17 2008. Dziki accepted a Letter Of Commendation from the Pleasant Hills PD on behalf of all other Baldwin EMS C-Line members who where present at the rescue. Along with Baldwin EMS, the Pleasants Hills Fire Department and Allegheny County 911 Dispatchers were also rewarded for their extraordinary actions.
On September 17, 2008 Baldwin EMS was dispatched along with the Pleasant Hills Fire Department and Pleasant Hills Police for a borough worker unconscious in a storm sewer. Rescue 510, Medic 513 and Medic 515 responded. Units Arrived on scene to find a Male sitting upright in a storm sewer that was approximately 10-12 deep and less than 2 feet wide, Male was noted to be semi conscious at the time. Workers on scene reported that the male came up the hole and stated that he was having difficulty breathing, he then passed out and fell back into the hole. Curt Neill on scene assumed EMS Command. EMS and FD on scene began to meter the sewer, Initial atmospheric readings of the man hole where 250-300ppm of CO & 20.9% of Oxygen. FD then placed a positive pressure fan to provide fresh air into the hole. Pt was noted to become more responsive with the fresh air. An Oxygen Cylinder was lowered along with a non rebreather mask at 15 lpm was lowered to the Pt and he was directed by crews to place the O2 around his face. Paramedic Dziki dressed out in a rescue harness. A Tri-Pod was set up along with a 4:1 haul rope system. The Tri-Pod was placed over sewer opening and secured in the ground. Atmospheric readings were monitored after the positive pressure fan was applied, Reading were noted to be 0ppm of CO and 20.9% of O2. Paramedic Dziki was then lowered into the hole by the Rope Haul system with C-Collar and Help device. Once in the hole Paramedic Dziki confirmed the Atmospheric readings were 0ppm of CO and 20.9% of O2. The Pt was found sitting upright at the bottom of sewer and currently complaining of dizziness. Paramedic Dziki placed a cervical collar on the Pt. A HELP device was then placed around the Pt so that the Pt would be able to be raised from the sewer using the 4:1 system. Pt was raised out of the hole and fully immobilized on a stretcher with long board and straps. The Pt was transported by Medic 513 to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital. There were no pictures taken at the time of the Rescue.
